"I trained as a doctor because I wanted to care for people. I became a founder because caring well meant changing the system itself."
Malone Mukwende is a UK-based physician whose work sits at the intersection of clinical medicine and entrepreneurship. While still a medical student, he co-authored Mind the Gap, a handbook documenting how clinical signs present on Black and Brown skin, after noticing that the textbooks he was learning from showed him almost none of the patients he would later treat.
That work catalysed an international conversation about diversity in medical education and led to the founding of Hutano, a digital health platform designed around underrepresented patient communities. He partnered with globally renowned skincare brand Neutrogena on this venture.
Today, his ventures, talks and writing focus on one question: what does medicine look like when it's actually built for everyone? He is particularly interested in how entrepreneurship can be used as a vehicle to improve health outcomes.
Dr. Mukwende is a public speaker, having delivered over 50 talks across 3 continents. He discusses the future of inclusive healthcare and the unconventional path between practising medicine and building the tools that improve it.
Outside of work, Dr. Mukwende is a passionate Arsenal fan with a growing interest in filmmaking.
